Can corruption be laid to rest in society or is it impossible?

Many politicians and ordinary citizens ask this question daily. Recently, a well-known Harvard scholar published his answer to the same question. In his book “Uncle Jim: A Portrait”, Dr. Alexander Dulles, a career ambassador for the United States and former Secretary of State, spoke about corruption and its effect on our nation. He explained that it is not possible to eradicate corruption from our society as it has permeated all aspects of our government.

Why is it that so many people are cynical about politicians who promise so much but fail to deliver? They point out that in our system of government, if something is not done, it will always be done. In other words, nothing is impossible. However, when asked if it is possible to lay to rest in society or is it impossible, some people answer yes and others answer no.

Some people claim that it is impossible to have a free society or it is impossible to fix anything. Such claims are not based on logic. Others say that if it is not possible to have a just and fair society, then what is the point in trying to make it one? The question should not be whether it is possible to have a society with corruption at its roots, but rather, whether it is possible to get rid of corruption.

Many people are of the view that, deep down, all societies are corrupt. This is not true. The idea that there is some kind of ‘level’ or ‘gradient ‘between pure states and corrupt societies is erroneous. It is said that in societies where grafts and kickbacks exist, corruption usually runs at the bottom rung. However, this is not true because even top officials, who engage in graft and kickbacks, cannot stay in power for long.

Another question that arises when someone asks; can corruption be laid to rest in society or is it impossible? The answer to this question actually depends on the definition of corruption. When people talk about corruption, they are talking about any instance when the government or an individual takes advantage of the services rendered by another. In other words, when a person receives goods for free and then offers those same goods for money, this is corruption. However, if the person or government institution provides equal goods and services, then this is not corruption.

However, in a country like the United States, things are different. In America, the government does not give away goods and services to people. Rather, people pay taxes to the government so that they can enjoy a level of protection over their rights and properties. For a long period of time, the American government did not engage in any type of corruption. Therefore, the question can be asked, can corruption be laid to rest in society or is it impossible?

Many people will give an answer of yes or no. However, you should also bear in mind that a true and honest man or woman will state the facts objectively. An objective person will give a truthful answer whether or not corruption can truly be laid to rest. Now, there are many individuals who will readily accept the answer that there can only be corruption if there are dishonest people in the society. However, there are also many individuals who will readily accept the answer that corruption cannot be solved without changing the society.

In any society, if people honestly try to live according to the moral code of the society, there will be absolutely no need to mention corruption can be laid to rest in society or is impossible. In any society, if people choose to live according to morality, then they will always be able to find solutions to any problem. In fact, society should work according to the moral code of the society. If we follow the moral code of our society and if we sincerely try to adhere to the moral code, then corruption can never occur. Indeed, corruption can never occur if we truly follow the moral code of our society.
