Single-sex school vs Mixed school; pros and cons.
There are pros and cons to both single sex schools and mixed sex schools. You need to consider the pros and cons of each option as a parent before you make your choice. Maybe you are on a small school board and can’t set your preference with ease. Or perhaps you are very much against sex education and don’t want your children exposed to it. Maybe your reason is religious, and you believe that sex is a sin.
Regardless of your personal beliefs, you must make your choice. Do you believe that sex education is vital? Does this mean that you would never, in a million years, hire a teacher who did offer sex education in a public school? Or is it not a choice for you? You must decide your stance here, before you even begin thinking about which sex school you’d prefer your children to attend.
For some single parents who are considering whether or not to enroll their children in a single sex or mixed sex school, the decision is simple. They just don’t believe in teaching sex in public schools. Sex education is just not something they feel comfortable with, no matter what the facts are on the subject. In the end, they make the decision based on their own beliefs and morals.
As a result, single parents can choose a sex-specific or a gender-neutral school. They have the ability to choose which curriculum they would like their children to learn. They even have the ability to control which activities and which events occur within their homes. This means that your children’s privacy is more of a priority. If you are religious, then a religious sex school might be for you. If you are not, then a neutral or mixed sex school may be a better option for your family.
There is another thing to consider. While single sex schools do not offer any programs on same-sex relations, they do offer resources and help for such issues. This could mean the difference between a successful experience and a dismal one. Some of these resources and help include: gay clubs (whether online or otherwise), seminars, informational literature, classes and counseling. These resources could easily save you thousands of dollars and hours of wasted effort. Not to mention the fact that you’ll be doing your part as a parent to ensure that your children have the best possible start in life.
Even if you decide to go with a single sex private school, there are still things to consider. The first is whether or not the school has a policy prohibiting gender segregation. Some schools allow this while others do not. Be sure to find out exactly what your policy is before making the decision to attend.
While many people assume that attending a single-sex school means an end to options, that is not necessarily true. If, for instance, you want the opportunity to explore a sexual lifestyle but a single sex school does not allow it, you can consider enrolling in a mixed student sex program. Again, make sure you understand the policies of the school, how your choices will work and if you can explore such lifestyle options without being spurned. There is nothing wrong with exploring sexual preferences and fantasies provided that they are allowed. Otherwise, you may find yourself feeling alienated.
If you have questions, you can ask the single mom at your school or browse online for other single parents who are ready to share their thoughts. It’s a decision that may haunt you until you come to terms with your own beliefs and desires. Don’t let your child’s school dictate how much they should explore sex. That said, be informed. Take advantage of all your options and make the decision that’s right for your family.
